MUSIC CENTER OF LA COUNTY
"A celebration of the
universal human impulse to create."
Music Director/Co-Event Designer/Arranger/Mentor/Host
Active Arts® at The Music Center—launched in July 2004—is a nationally celebrated model for civic engagement through the arts. Active Arts brings together recreational artists from all over Los Angeles county to sing, dance, make music or tell stories via in-depth, low risk, mistakes-allowed events.
Since my involvement in 2006 (and it continues) we have explored a wide variety of ways to engage our community and their music making desires.
Active Arts music events are designed to cultivate deep practice skills—a holistic approach to engaged, thoughtful, and deliberate practice. As we teach, we model this concept by patiently unpacking an idea, a technique, or a song, and strive to find the "sweet spot" between fun and work. When it comes to practice (of all types) success can only be achieved incrementally—there is no giant leap to mastery—so our goal is to mentor our participants and make the process joyful. At the heart of every event is a celebration of the universal human impulse to create!
