Composed for the KCET series To Foster Change, directed by my friend Mobolaji Olambiwonnu. The series is about adults who went through the foster care system as children, how they dealt with the experience and who they are today.
A changeling is a fairy child that has been left in place of a human child. To me this might be what a foster child feels like—from one world, living in another. Listening to the music now, looking out at the cloudy, misty mountains of Altadena, I hear it in another way—a cinematic winter landscape: snow falling, pine trees, frozen tundra, and change. Context is everything.
The music is fairly straight forward, piano and string orchestra. There are other colors and sounds mingling with the music too. This is something that is always attractive to me—sonic color.
There is also color in the piano. It is very resonant with lots of overtones. If you're not familiar with overtones, it's like steam floating off of a cup of coffee.
